What is World Schooling

There are many different types of school styles for the homeschooling set.  Unschoolers use child-led activities, realizing the educational value of many interests children have.  Parents can also use their child's interests and life around them to create units in Unit Study homeschooling.  For more classical styles, parents can set up their own school room and try to run a more typical school in their home.  Charlotte Mason, Thomas Jefferson, Montessori and Waldorf are each styles inspired by their namesakes, some relying more heavily on a large variety of reading materials and others more hands-on involvement.  Almost any homeschool parent may start with one style and then find a combination of styles that fits their life and family best.

We currently are a family of one military parent, one house parent, and two children - preschool and elementary age.  While we are home, we tend to use a few worksheets, several on-line options like ABCmouse and Khan Academy and unit studies.  We also are avid world schoolers.  World schoolers appreciate the lessons available outside the home and in the world.  Someday this will mean more world travels for us, but with car seats we are more of a local world schooling family right now.  World schooling doesn't mean that we constantly have to travel far from home.  We appreciate the many activities close to home and appreciate and study the places we do travel too.

Our city has several options for classes.  Our kids love gymnastics, soccer, swimming, and dance classes.  The city also offers French classes for elementary kids and several great camps with themes like dinosaurs, Legos and princesses.  Michael's offers kids art classes most Saturdays and sometimes during the week.  A group of local moms lead a free music class for younger children.  The local library hosts storytimes for several age groups, and often holds free kids activities from Lego club and science experiments to nature art and holiday-themed activities.  Local parks often hold special themed days and are fun to explore even without special activities.

We are also lucky enough to live close enough to a larger city with a zoo, art museum, history museum, train museum and several other day trips.  World schooling doesn't have to mean expensive travels across the world.  Start small.  What better way to understand the world than to understand your neighborhood first.

P.S.  Many outside classes are currently on hold due to corona virus, but that doesn't mean you have to be 100% trapped inside.  World schooling can start in your backyard or in observations made while walking around the neighborhood.  Just practice social distancing, remain inside if you are ill, and enjoy a unit on germs like those available through Home Science Tools.
